 The Vercors

Natural citadel surrounded by steep cliffs, in the Vercors change scenery,
On the high plateaus you penetrate the fortress in the middle of the forest of pines with hooks,
Distinguished from the spruces by their very green foliage and the gray of their leotards,
Where the cross-bill of the fir trees blows up the scales of the dried pine cones.

The mountain fauna is well represented in the national reserve of the approaches,
Where the ibex warming on the rocks of the Pas de l'Essaure,
While the variable hare, white as snow, blends into the immaculate scenery,
Her girlfriend the marmot, caulked in her burrow, lives in slow motion while waiting for the summer to busy.

But above all, through its vertigo paths, the Vercors symbolizes the Resistance,
A high place where the spirit of rebellion blew during the second major war,
Not a valley, not a forest, not a clearing where there was a fierce fight,
Here a few thousand under-armed guerrillas will face the over-equipped Wehrmacht.

On our highest mountains
We took the maquis
To fight against Germany
And not be enslaved

Let's walk to the fire comrade
Let us march on fire boldly
Beyond the shootings
Freedom awaits us

After the enthusiasm of the "dissidents" gathered in the camps of the Chau,
The Montagnard Plan will not enter into the overall strategy of the allies,
With the dramatic consequences for the young combatants annihilated by the army of the fachos,
After a week of fierce fighting leaving villages destroyed and civilians massacred.
